So in addition to the dangers of the amount of estrogen found in soy milk, there is another issue found in both soy milk and almond milk: Carrageenan.
Carrageenan is a food additive extracted from red seaweed and is thought to be cancer-causing. This was brought to my attention from my dear friend, Heather, who was drinking her last bit of soy milk the other day and decided to do a bit of research online and found Dr. Weill's website. Check out his articles on Rethinking Soy?, Can Carrageenan in Soy Milk Cause Cancer? and Is Soy Milk Safe?
Very interesting. Very interesting indeed. Heather, went to Whole Foods yesterday with her new found knowlege and found that Carrageenan is found even in the organic soy milks and organic almond milks. I think she found ONE soy milk without this ingredient. The only cow's milk-substitute that did not contain Carrageenan is ... RICE MILK! Yes, the my least favorite of cow's milk-sbustitutes. So now my goal is to find the best tasting Rice Milk. Will get back to you on that.
There is always goat's milk as an option which will digest far better than regular dairy products from cow's. You can get goat's milk at Whole Foods, I believe.
